John Forbes of Canaan, Connecticut, began making tools, chain, wagon parts, and nails with a bloomery and forge shop in 1746. Conclusion of the colonial wars with France brought increased demand for iron and forged products that an ordinary smith could not easily make. Millwrights needed parts for new grist, saw, fulling, paper, and oil mills as well as repair parts for older ones.
When tobacco prices slumped, Virginians looked to shipbuilding to diversify their economy. Lack of sawmills and ironworks needed to supply essential materials to the shipyards frustrated these attempts through the seventeenth century. However, when in 1685 British shipwrights began building vessels in Philadelphia, they could draw on Pennsylvania’s mills and forges for essential materials. Their production increased rapidly in the next decades. Shipyards lined eight blocks of the town’s original waterfront until congestion forced them to move south of the city to a community named Southwark, after the London suburb that specialized in shipbuilding.
