In the 1980s, Pilsen was very much a poor immigrant community, but by the 1990s, it was slowly being gentrified by artists, actors, and the University of Illinois at Chicago, which had a campus close by and wanted to expand, but it maintained its deep Mexican roots.

Their families worked hard and supported themselves, they went to school, why did people hate them so much? What had they done? The schools ignored what was happening. “There’s so many times when they don’t feel like anyone at the schools really care,” said Willa Mae Thompson, who worked for the county migrant education program and is African-American. She had gotten to know the community very well. “You have two or three counselors at the schools and nobody pulled them aside to say, well, this is going to happen and we want you to know we are not a part of this and we’re here for you,” she said.
